US Department of Homeland Security: HERO (Human Exploitation Rescue Operative) Internships:

Recruitment for HERO Interns: The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) runs a program for disabled vets called the Human Exploitation Rescue Operative (HERO) program that trains them to be Digital Forensic Examiners (DFEs). Command has placed civilian 1801 positions in five BN DFE Cells (10th, 502d, 11th, 19th, and 22d). The HERO program consists of two months of training at DHS, followed by a 10-month placement with a law enforcement agency for field training and OJT. There is no obligation to hire the HERO upon completion of the field training. The intent of the program is to train disabled vets in a craft that will result in full-time employment. During the 10-month training at a field unit, they are unpaid and do not occupy or fill a civilian authorized position. They are anticipated to work between 24 to 40 hours a week. USAJOBS will make an announcement for HERO openings for the BNs with one position each in December. The announcement window will be 10 DEC1 8 to 01 FEB 19. Training will begin 06 JUN 19 to 02 AUG 19. Upon completion of training they will move to the BN or USACIL for their 10 month internship and available for permanent hiring at the BN around midsummer 2020.
